We were told on a tour around old town in Edinburgh that this used to be the entrance to a jail where people would able to spit down on the prisoners. It has since been turned into this heart where it is supposed to represent the last beating moments of a prisoners life. It is also the only place you are legally allowed to spit! Enjoy
